Freelance Bookkeeper Job Description

Job Title: Bookkeeper 

Reports To: Project Director 

Liaises with: Project Director, Project Co-ordinator and Trustees as appropriate. 

Contract20 month fixed term (with potential for extension) 
Hours: 1 day a month or 7.5 hours per month plus 4 days year end  

Job Purpose 

The Bookkeeper is responsible in assisting the Project Director and Board of Trustees with ensuring the financial integrity of EATMT by maintaining accurate financial records, supporting compliance with charity regulations, and enabling EATMT to deliver its aims. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

  • To maintain accurate and up-to-date financial ledgers, including income, expenditure, payroll journals, and bank reconciliations. 
  • To record donations, grants, and fundraising income, ensuring proper allocation and documentation. 
  • To create and process invoices and regular payments using Xero accounting system.   
  • To prepare quarterly and annual financial reports for the Board of Trustees.  
  • To assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash-flow monitoring. 
  • To provide financial data and analysis to support grant applications, reports, and audits 
  • To ensure compliance with financial regulations and reporting requirements. 
  • Assemble year end information for financial examination by the Trust’s Accountants 
  • Maintain accounting software and financial filing systems. 
  • Liaise with banks, suppliers, donors, and fundraising partners regarding financial matters. 

Skills & Qualifications 

Essential 

  • Proven experience in bookkeeping, finance administration, or a similar role. 
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and charity finance practices. 
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, Sage) and Microsoft Office. 
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisational and time management skills. 
  • Integrity and ability to handle confidential information. 
  • Professional, reliable, and friendly approach. 

Desirable: 

  • Experience working in the charity or nonprofit sector. 
  • Knowledge of charity accounting standards (e.g., SORP, if applicable). 
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., AAT, bookkeeping certification, finance degree). 
  • Experience working with budgets or supporting financial administration
